Climate Urgency and the Nordic Response

High level full day conference arranged by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) and Chalmers University of Technology. This conference will offer different perspectives – global, European and regional – on the Swedish/Nordic region, which is taking the lead in the clean industrial transition.

With respect to climate policy, Sweden was an early mover in introducing a tax on CO2 emissions from fossil fuels already in 1991. By the end of the 1990s the Swedish electricity sector was almost decarbonised. The remaining sectors, industry and transport, are curerntly the targets of ambitious decarbonization efforts, in Sweden and in the EU.

The Swedish heavy industry sector is rolling out several forward-looking projects, ranging from fossil-free steel manufacturing to battery production, with ambitious targets regarding material recycling. Sweden, and Finland, has substantial reserves of minerals and metals, which are crucial for accelerating electrification and the green transition.

The conference brings together top executives involved in global policymaking, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), national politics, international business, and the finance industry. A selected group of researchers from two interdisciplinary research programs – Mistra Carbon Exit and Mistra Electrification – will present exciting results on elements of the energy transition, with a focus on electrification.
