SnowSat-an AI approach towards efficient hydropower production

Spatially distributed and temporally dynamic snow information are highly valuable for the hydropower sector to optimize production, avoid water spillage and ensure dam safety. However, accurate quantification of snow amount, especially in mountainous areas, remains a big challenge.

Snowy Mountain with water running and satellit in the sky

In this research, we use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) to improve the estimation of snow water storage from satellite observations and prototype a snow service system in Sweden. This research can lead to improved hydropower management, increased hydropower production and enhanced preparedness to extreme events. We are currently developing and testing our approach in a pilot study area of northern Sweden. As a data-driven approach, this research and developed service will further benefit from the establishment of an extensive mountain snow monitoring network.

IVA’s 100 List 2024: Innovation through Interdisciplinary Research

IVA’s 100 List 2024 highlights a diverse range of research projects from Swedish universities, under the theme Technology in the Service of Humanity - Innovation through Interdisciplinary Research. The projects have been selected based on their great potential to create value through commercialization, business and method development, or societal impact. All participating researchers are interested in increased contacts with the business sector for the application and further development of their projects.

Named contact persons for each research project on the 100 List are responsible for the accuracy of the information presented.
