Review and selection

Following the closure of the application and nomination window for IVA’s 100-list, the next steps involve review and selection before R2B’s steering group decides which research projects will be included in this year’s list. All submitted applications are carefully examined by a designated review group to ensure that the research aligns with the relevant field and meets the criteria for the current list. Subsequently, a specialized selection committee evaluates all complete applications and submits their assessments to R2B’s steering group, which makes the final decision regarding the research projects to be featured on the 100-list.

Step 1 – The Review Group

The composition of the review group is refreshed for each 100-list and primarily includes master’s level students in entrepreneurship. Additional members may come from IVA’s student council or possess expertise from the NR network. The Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV) can also provide support for any unclear matters related to researchers’ handling of intellectual property rights.

Step 2 – The Selection Committee

The selection committee comprises over 40 individuals with specialized knowledge across various subject areas. Before each new call for submissions, the committee is supplemented with experts whose skills correspond to the thematic focus of that year’s 100-list. Many of the invited individuals continue their involvement annually after their initial participation, resulting in a broad, experienced, and robust committee that reflects IVA’s extensive network.

Effects of participating

IVA (The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences) has published a total of five 100-lists, featuring 366 research projects from 27 universities and colleges across Sweden, both large and small. Being included on the list and participating in tailored activities has led to numerous new connections with the business community and fellow researchers. IVA's 100 list serves as a unique showcase, enhancing the chances of these projects making a tangible impact.

In spring 2024, a long-term follow-up was conducted with research projects that had participated in any of the 100-lists between 2019 and 2023. Nearly all researchers who responded to the survey capitalized on their involvement, leveraging the momentum provided by IVA's 100 list and the subsequent R2B Summit. The most significant benefits were observed by researchers or research teams driven to commercialize or otherwise utilize their research results.

Here are some of the effects experienced by many research projects that participated in IVA's 100 list and R2B Summit:

- Contributions to professional growth.

- Formation of new companies and substantial growth.

- Enhanced visibility both in Sweden and internationally.

- Recognition as high-quality research.

- Advancements in business practices and technology.

- Companies built with 16 employees and 500,000 users across 150 countries.

- A platform to connect with partners and funders nationally and internationally.

- Brand building, expanded customer base and continuous visibility.

- Participation in REACH, exclusive incubator program for 100-list participants.

- Contributions to scientific journals, conference talks, impactful press releases, and participation in scientific podcasts.

- Launch of new research projects in Sweden and abroad.

- Partnerships with entities such as Stora Enso, Axfood, KPMG, Skogsstyrelsen, MSB, AB Volvo, and Polestar.

- Successful fundraising efforts.

- New competencies complementing existing teams.
