EvacAware: Real-Time Intelligence for Coordinated Evacuations

The lack of situational awareness and poor communication among evacuation teams and between responders and evacuees lead to delayed response times, increased risk of injury or death. We designed EvacAware, a smart system that helps evacuation teams make better decisions quickly.

Photocatalysis process, turning polluted water to clean water.

Cleaning water with catalysis using light and advanced 2D materials

Harmful chemicals, such as PFAS— so-called forever chemicals—pollute the waters, endangering everyone’s health. Our research combats this situation using our recently discovered MXenes and goldene to create catalysts that operate by harnessing light. These catalysts trigger reactions that disintegrate the pollutants without toxic byproducts, mimicking nature’s system, but with thousands-fold increase in efficiency. MXenes and goldene are two-dimensional (2D) sheets of carbides and gold, respectively, which are patented by us or in the public domain.

Tele-Interactome for Vector Mosquito Control

We use semiochemicals (scents for mosquito communication) and a parasite-produced phagostimulant to control mosquitoes by disrupting their behavior.

A planet covered in potatoes

Potato Improver

Potato Improver is a project developing heat-resistant potato varieties using the 2020 Nobel Prize awarded CRISPR/Cas technology, also known as the gene scissors, to address the growing challenges in agriculture posed by a warmer climate.

Green.AI

The Green Area Factor represents the ratio of “eco-efficient surface area” to the total property area. Manually calculating this can be cumbersome due to the labor-intensive process of identifying ecosystem objects in urban areas.

Reimagining Cyber-Systems: Agile and Adaptive

Our research addresses the need for flexible, adaptable industrial systems, tackling inefficiencies in complex system development. COVID-19 highlighted these challenges, as industries struggled to rapidly shift production.

Detecting Mutations in Tissue and Cells

This research project aims to develop a cutting-edge molecular tool for highly sensitive and specific profiling of genetic mutations in intact tissues and cells. Our tool can enable researchers and clinicians to detect, map, and quantify mutations at the single-cell level within their native spatial context, overcoming current limitations in tissue disaggregation and loss of spatial information.

Campus.AI

The Campus.AI project leverages AI to transform how we understand and utilise campus spaces, addressing crucial challenges in energy efficiency and sustainable building usage. Campus.AI focuses particularly on occupancy patterns, and together with other environmental measurements is able to predict space utilisation, as well as detects potential anomalies, taking into account the features of the campus such as lecture rooms, labs, and more.

Collaborative Large Scale Autonomous Task Allocation for aerial multi-robots based Mine Inspections

The biggest trend in the mining industry is the extraction of deposits from increasing larger depths that forces the utilization of novel concepts for deep mining at depths where the human presence is not possible and only fully autonomous robotized solutions for inspection and extraction can secure a safe and profitable mining.

About IVA’s 100 List

IVA’s annual 100 List pulls together a wide range of research projects from Swedish higher education institutions on topical themes. The selection process picks out the projects that are deemed to offer the greatest potential to create value through commercialisation, business and method development or societal impact. All the participating researchers are interested in closer contact with the business community for the application and continued development of their projects.

All about IVA’s 100 List – Q&A
